Predicting Worry Based on Intolerance of Uncertainty and Selected Functions of Future Thinking: The Moderating Role of Self-Compassion Among Individuals with Moderate-to-Severe Generalized Anxiety Symptoms
Background and Objective: Persistent, uncontrollable worry is a central feature of generalized anxiety symptoms and may be associated with responses to uncertainty and future thinking. This study aims to predict worry based on intolerance of uncertainty and four functions of future thinking—negative emotion regulation, problem-solving, boredom reduction, and death preparation—and examine the moderating role of self-compassion.
Method: This cross-sectional, descriptive-correlational study will include Iranian residents aged 18–60 who score 10 or higher on the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item Scale. Participants will be recruited through online convenience sampling and screening. The target sample is 300 valid cases. Measures include the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item Scale, Penn State Worry Questionnaire, Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale, Functions of Future Thinking Scale, and Self-Compassion Scale–Short Form.
Data Analysis and Expected Findings: Structural equation modeling will examine the direct effects of the predictors and the interaction effects of self-compassion on worry. Findings may clarify cognitive and regulatory factors associated with worry among individuals with moderate-to-severe generalized anxiety symptoms.
Ethical Considerations: Participation will be voluntary, anonymous, and based on electronic informed consent. Participants may withdraw before final submission. Data will remain confidential, be securely stored, and be used solely for scientific purposes.
