This study will be conducted to examine the effect of couples’ communication patterns on marital burnout, with the mediating role of satisfying basic psychological needs. Marital burnout, as a destructive phenomenon, is associated with emotional, psychological, and physical exhaustion and is considered one of the key factors contributing to the rising divorce rate. Couples’ communication patterns, including constructive mutual, mutual avoidance, and demand/withdraw patterns, can predict the level of marital burnout. Moreover, satisfying basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, and relatedness) plays a significant role in the quality of couples’ relationships.

This study will be conducted using a quantitative method and structural equation modeling (SEM). The statistical population will consist of married women in Zanjan in the year 2025, and a sample of 250 individuals will be selected using the convenience sampling method. Data will be collected using Pines’ Marital Burnout Questionnaire, Christensen’s Communication Patterns Questionnaire, and Gagné’s Basic Psychological Needs Scale.

Keywords: Marital burnout, couples’ communication patterns, basic psychological needs.
