This study aims to develop a model of intercultural competencies that influence the academic adjustment of non-local first-year students. Domestic academic migration exposes students to subtle cultural, linguistic, ethnic, and regional differences, thereby affecting their academic adjustment. Unlike previous research—which has largely focused on international students and quantitative methods—this study employs a qualitative approach and grounded theory methodology to present an indigenous, context-specific model. The study population consists of non-local first-year students at Allameh Tabataba'i University during the 2025–2026 academic year. Participants are selected through purposive and theoretical sampling, with the process continuing until theoretical saturation is reached. Data are collected via in-depth, semi-structured interviews and field notes, and are analyzed using open, axial, and selective coding based on the Strauss and Corbin approach. The final model will be constructed around causal conditions, the core phenomenon, strategies, contextual and intervening conditions, and consequences. The findings are expected to help identify effective intercultural competencies, enrich the theoretical literature, and inform the design of support, counseling, and empowerment programs tailored to the needs of non-local students.
