Dynamic knee valgus is a faulty lower-extremity movement pattern characterized by an inward deviation of the knee during dynamic activities. This deviation stems from the movement of the femur and tibia and can influence an individual's functional movements by affecting the joints proximal and distal to the knee (i.e., the hip and ankle). Three-dimensional analyses have identified dynamic knee valgus as a multifaceted, multi-joint phenomenon; essentially, this faulty movement pattern comprises a combination of altered lower-extremity kinematics—specifically increased hip adduction and internal rotation coupled with tibial abduction and external or internal rotation—which can be observed and assessed during functional tasks such as landing, squatting, stair climbing/descending, and walking. The knee joint is situated at the midpoint of the lower extremity kinetic chain and is subjected to significant stress during weight-bearing activities; excessive knee motion in the frontal plane can increase the load on the anterior cruciate ligament and, at high levels, lead to ligamentous failure.
